Coordinating a Global Build: Enabling Scania's Planning Overhaul

Automotive Manufacturing (Heavy Vehicles) • Europe, Latin America, China

Headquartered in Södertälje, Sweden, Scania has operated continuously since 1911 and delivered more than 102,000 vehicles globally in 2024. At the heart of its strategy is a long-term purpose to "drive the shift" towards a more sustainable transport system.

Scania's product strategy is built on modularity. A wide range of selectable characteristics come together in a final configuration, allowing every product to be tailored to a customer's specific needs. That flexibility, however, creates significant supply chain complexity across three major production hubs in Latin America, Europe and China, all supported by a global supplier network and around 18,000 people working in production and logistics.

    Challenge

Scania supplies more than 3,000 delivery points worldwide, with wide variation in transport routes, lead times and capacity constraints. Demand volatility is a constant reality, and the company must be able to shift production between regions when volumes fluctuate - sometimes across continents. Each decision depends on different lead times, supplier limitations and factory capabilities.

Legacy systems relied heavily on simplified supply models and manual steps that limited speed and alignment, and made it harder to understand the trade-offs behind each decision. Modelling real operating conditions and lead times was difficult, and weekly planning cycles restricted the company's ability to respond.

"We reached a point where our tools could no longer show how different demands were pulling on the same supply capacity. We hit the limits of what spreadsheets can support when it comes to dynamically visualising supply conflicts, risks and trade-offs."
    - Lucas Oliveira, Manager, Supply Chain Planning Development, Scania Group

    Solution

After a two-year market review and detailed pre-study, Scania selected Kinaxis Maestro™ as the platform best matched to its requirements - chosen for its ability to support complex global flows, model constraints accurately, and bring production hubs, suppliers and shared capacity together in a single, connected planning view.

Technology alone, however, is rarely what determines success. Scania engaged Grange to upskill the core team and apply an end user lens to the transformation - tightening the solution's technical design to the 'To-Be' processes. Grange's contribution focused on the human side of the change:

    1
Upskilling the core team and building a shared understanding of modern, concurrent planning
    2
Applying an end user lens to tighten the solution's technical design to the 'To-Be' processes
    3
Designing, developing and delivering tailored training materials
    4
Creating end user Maestro™ skills assessments to measure and build capability

Scania and its partners are now working closely to define how the platform will operate across the organisation. Process experts are designing new planning methods, internal teams are building the required data pipelines, and change management efforts are helping employees transition to new ways of working. The rollout will continue through 2027 as Scania strengthens its data foundations and brings global users onto a single planning environment.

"Grange has been a valuable partner in assisting us in making sense of Maestro value possibilities in our business reality"

    Impact

With Maestro™ in place and its teams equipped to use it, Scania is laying the foundation for faster, more confident planning across its production hubs, suppliers and shared capacity:

    Near Real-Time Scenarios

Planners can test alternatives and adjust plans before a delay or shortage impacts customers

    A Single, Connected View

Teams can see how decisions in one part of the supply chain influence the whole network and its customers

    Clearer Visibility of Shared Constraints

When multiple demand streams draw on the same capacity, planners can identify conflicts earlier and make informed trade-offs

    One Synchronised Environment

Replacing separate tools for demand, capacity and commitments with a shared view of real-world conditions

This capability is especially critical for customised vehicles, where even small timing changes can affect a customer's operations. By working from a single, connected planning view, Scania's teams can balance demand, capacity and commitments with far greater confidence.

    The Grange Difference

A platform of this scale only delivers value when people trust it and know how to use it. Grange's role was to make sure the change landed with the teams who plan every day:

    Capability That Sticks

Shared planning language and confidence across global teams

    Adoption, Not Just Deployment

Helping people move from spreadsheets to a connected way of working

    Sustained Momentum

Keeping energy and engagement high across a multi-year rollout

    New Ways of Working

Practical planning methods designed around the configured platform

The right platform sets the ambition - but capable, engaged people are what turn it into better decisions every day.

    Customer Quote

"A platform like Kinaxis puts everything in one place, and gives us the context to focus on the decisions that truly impact business."
    - Lucas Oliveira, Manager, Supply Chain Planning Development, Scania Group
